Transforming dense provincial statistics into accessible public policy

The Work

  • The success of public policy relies entirely on the public’s ability to understand it. Tasked with refining the initial BC Stats draft, I bridged the gap between complex provincial data and the everyday citizen. I dismantled dense statistical findings and heavy bureaucratic terminology, rewriting the massive report into an accessible, jargon-free narrative that clearly communicated the province's sustainability goals.

  • Navigating a high-visibility provincial report meant managing multiple layers of official brand messaging. I provided the overarching content consultation required to ensure the narrative was not just readable, but strategically aligned. This meant actively shaping the copy to perfectly reflect and support the Ministry's overarching Move. Commute. Connect. and Clean BC mandates.

  • Writing for the public sector requires absolute editorial precision to ensure facts are never compromised. Throughout the drafting and editing lifecycle, I acted as the editorial gatekeeper, rigorously applying Government Communications and Public Engagement (GCPE) and Canadian Press (CP) style guidelines. This strict oversight ensured the finalized documents met the absolute highest standard of government compliance.

The Brief

Following the comprehensive BC Stats Active Transportation Strategy General Population Survey (2019), the Ministry needed to report their findings to the public. The challenge was adapting a dense, 30-page draft loaded with provincial statistics into an engaging, accessible narrative for everyday British Columbians, without losing the factual accuracy and strict neutrality required by government reporting.

The Strategy

Acting as the lead copywriter and content consultant, I oversaw the writing and editing of both the full-length report and a condensed public "Report Card." I strategically stripped away dense bureaucratic jargon, rewriting complex statistical explanations—covering demographics, regional differences, and future infrastructure expectations—into clear, accessible language. I collaborated closely with the design team to ensure the copy integrated seamlessly with visual assets, while strictly adhering to Government Communications and Public Engagement (GCPE) and Canadian Press (CP) style guides.

The Impact

The refined messaging successfully bridged the gap between dense government reporting and the general public. By replacing technical language with an accessible, human-centric narrative, the finalized reports provided a clear and engaging look into the future of active transportation in BC, allowing the Ministry to confidently launch the fully compliant documents to the public.
